But the silver lining there was that it made me concentrate on what I felt I was definitely making headway on at the time, which was engineering and mixing. I was recording guide drums in my lounge room with maybe a quarter of the mics I’d usually use, maybe three or four most of the time. I ended up having a lot of fun with those restrictions and created sounds I never would have in a bigger studio. It has been great though, no wrong purchases when you already have a pretty good idea of what each one does from its software counterparts. I’m especially enjoying being able to program polyrhythmic patterns that rarely repeat and keep evolving. It’s great to have a device like that, where you’re confined to one element of music and you can let ideas run wild without distraction. For me it’s mostly been a writing tool, more so than being a conventional drum machine. You go from having some very traditional analog drum sounds to instantly entering 1990’s Warp Records territory once you begin to saturate and morph the sounds into something a little more unusual and ear grabbing. In these particular moments, the instruments are there to « follow » the choir of the religious people, who are there to spiritually purify themselves, singing and dancing. It is really complex music, but the people there know it and understand it, they have been hearing it since their childhood. At some moment, trance and possessions are present, and it is because of the music. The instruments are always percussion, one singer and the choir of the people. There are thousands of songs that are in different African languages, and the musicians follow the songs that have specifics rhythms and breaks.

With the Afro-Cuban influences, what flavor does it bring to your music?

I was musically born in Cuba, thanks to the « Chinitos » familly, and it happened in the ceremonies, playing with them. So my rhythm background isn’t Afro-American like most of us in Western countries, it’s Afro-Cuban. I have hundreds of rhythms in my head that have nothing similar in our culture. They have their own aesthetic and improvisations, and they reveal a great variety of emotions and feelings. My music will be deeply influenced by that at different levels, like proper rhythms of course, but also in the structures of the tracks, the breaks, the sounds and so on.

How would you explain these differences from a rhythmic perspective?

I would say that the main differences would be:
- that the rhythmic accents are almost always syncopated. Most of our music has its accent on the second and fourth beats, these are the typical snare hits. Those accents do not exist in Afro-Cuban music, but there is a lot of syncopated ones.
- there are plenty of rhythms with binary and ternary notes at the same time. I mean that typical Afro-Cuban music can perfectly have one instrument playing a binary rhythm, and another instrument playing a ternary one! There are also rhythms that have both cadences mixed in the same loop.

- there is a huge repertory of ternary rhythms, and that the use of semi quavers is omnipresent in the ternary rhythms. In western countries, we feel ternary rhythms like « round », or a « TA KA TA - TA KA TA - TA KA TA » feeling. In Cuba, ternary is played also with semiquavers, and it gives a great variety of possibilities. I’ve actually used a lot of these for the track « Debut », that is present in the video.

Typical Afterbeat Rhythm

Afro-Cuban Rhythm

On DrumBrute

You integrated DrumBrute into your setup. Micah Brown, the director of the
film, reached out to me and asked if I would create the music, and I could tell from just
one conversation with him that he was going to make something great. Even though it’s a documentary,
I wanted to treat the score as more of a feature film. Both main characters have ‘theme
songs’ there are some movements that repeat in different styles or on different instruments.
I had my engineer (Josh Lovell) sample the sounds of the fights and training. We spent a
little over a month just building a catalogue of things to pull from. Then I sort of just
locked myself in the studio with the film. The initial cut had 37 original pieces in it.
When I started it I had a few friends who had done projects similar tell me it would be one
of the hardest things I would have ever done……. and they were definitely correct. It takes a
lot of time with all of the edits to the film etc. It was also the first time where I’ve had
to make music that wasn’t for me. Whether or not it was stylistically “my thing” or not
didn’t matter. I had to create something that assisted in telling this story. That was the
                    only thing that mattered.

Building the Sounds

There was one month where I had to travel as I was working on the film and
figured I could keep writing by just bringing a MIDI controller and my laptop. A few of the
songs I was working on seemed pretty special so when I came back to my studio I opened them
up and went to replace the MIDI sounds. I noticed that the only tracks I couldn’t beat or
replace were the Arturia Analog Lab sounds. I own some of the keyboards the software is
replicating and I couldn’t even tell the difference. Nothing felt too thin or cheapened.
This was kind of early on in the process and from that point on it was in every song. One
other huge factor for me was

I could recall sounds with ease and adjust them in no time with each
edit of the film. This saved me hours.

I used the CMI, Prophet 5, and the DX7 a lot. The preset options are pretty
stellar but the most important thing to me is that it never seemed daunting. Too many
options can be crippling to me sometimes. I like to be forced into thinking creatively. If
my choices are infinite I rely too much on them. I never had that issue with Analog Lab. It
                    always felt inspired.

Golden Beats

DrumBrute Impact; this machine is insane.
