de la orquestación polifónica
Cuando Tom Oberheim presentó el módulo Synthesizer Expander Module (SEM) en 1974, estaba pensado para servir un simple complemento para otros sintetizadores. Pero rápidamente se convirtió en una pieza central por derecho propio.
Tom ya había tenido éxito fabricando efectos y un secuenciador, e incluso en su labor como distribuidor de ARP, pero el SEM era algo nuevo: un sintetizador compacto y asequible que rebosaba belleza analógica.
Un paso hacia la polifonía
Una versión de dos voces con teclado llegó en 1975, seguida de otras de cuatro voces y, finalmente, el inmenso modelo de ocho voces. Mediante la combinación de módulos independientes, Oberheim ofreció orquestación polifónica genuina años antes de que otros sintes polifónicos “totalmente programables” saltaran a la palestra.
El legado del SEM
Artistas de renombre como John Carpenter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul (Weather Report) y Geddy Lee, de Rush, ayudaron a consolidar el modelo Eight-Voice como un clásico, combinándolo a menudo con otros sintetizadores de bandera. Los mismos circuitos del SEM sirvieron de base para hitos posteriores de Oberheim como los OB-X, OB-Xa y OB-8, solo que ahora empleando microchips.
