Le CS-80 a été pensé pour permettre à une célèbre marque d’instruments de se faire une place dans l’univers des synthétiseurs. Il a dépassé toutes les attentes et est devenu une référence dans le monde de la musique, de Toto à Vangelis.
Ses commandes expressives, son interface singulière et son magnifique son ont fait sa réputation : autrefois solide, celle-ci est aujourd’hui quasi légendaire. Le CS-80 V préserve cet héritage dans toute son authenticité, et vous en fait bénéficier dans votre studio virtuel.
Développer un instrument virtuel à la hauteur de la légende matérielle a été l’un des projets les plus stimulants que nous ayons jamais entrepris. Nous sommes ravis du résultat et nous espérons que vous le serez aussi.
Yamaha a compris dès les années 1970 que la synthèse était l’avenir du marché des claviers professionnels. Avant le CS-80, le fabricant avait déjà tâté le terrain à deux reprises, avec le petit SY-1 monodique et le gigantesque GX-1. Ce dernier ressemblait à un grand orgue à buffet, avec ses trois claviers et ses pédales, et seules quelques stars déboursèrent les $60 000 nécessaires à son acquisition. Mais parmi elles figuraient Keith Emerson, Stevie Wonder et John Paul Jones, et ils adoraient leur instrument. Le concept ayant fait ses preuves, l’heure était venue de passer à un modèle de série.
Yamaha a donc lancé le CS-80 en 1976, devançant d’au moins un an certains synthés polyphoniques américains de renom. L’architecture des voix et les circuits du GX-1 se retrouvèrent ainsi gentiment compactés dans un instrument plus facilement transportable (90 kg tout de même) dans son flight case. Avec un tarif affiché à $6 900, il restait onéreux, mais même si d’autres synthés ont ensuite rendu la polyphonie et les oscillateurs multiples plus légers et abordables, de nombreux musiciens accomplis ont continué de considérer le CS-80 comme la Rolls Royce des synthés analogiques.
Where most other pro-level polyphonic synths’ voices ran two oscillators into a common filter and VCA, the CS-80 opted for two complete, parallel synthesis chains: VCO, VCF, VCA, and touch response settings for the keyboard. In a way, this made the CS-80 the first multi-timbral poly synth, though you could only mix the two timbres, not split them on the keyboard.
The CS-80 found itself in the hands of many now-iconic artists including Tony Banks of Genesis and Peter Gabriel in his solo work. Michael Jackson famously played one himself on “Billie Jean.” Toto used a CS to great effect on the keyboard solo of “Rosanna” and the “Dune” soundtrack. But it was Greek composer Vangelis who would truly immortalize the CS-80 in the scores to “Chariots of Fire” and “Blade Runner.”
