En la década de 1970, Yamaha ya sabía que la síntesis era el futuro del mercado de los teclados profesionales. Antes del CS-80, habían surcado las aguas en dos lugares bastante distintos: el SY-1, compacto y monofónico, y el titánico GX-1. Este último parecía un gran órgano con consola, con tres manuales y pedales, por el que solo unas pocas estrellas se atrevieron a gastarse los 60.000 $ que costaba. Pero entre esas estrellas estaban Keith Emerson, Stevie Wonder y John Paul Jones, que adoraban sus GX-1. El “prototipo” era un éxito y había llegado el momento de crear el modelo de serie.
Yamaha lanzó el CS-80 en 1976, con un año o más de ventaja sobre algunos importantes sintes polifónicos estadounidenses. Consiguió encajar la misma arquitectura de voz y los mismos circuitos del GX-1 en un diseño más portable (90 kg) que se podía recoger en su propia maleta de viaje. Where most other pro-level polyphonic synths’ voices ran two oscillators into a common filter and VCA, the CS-80 opted for two complete, parallel synthesis chains: VCO, VCF, VCA, and touch response settings for the keyboard. In a way, this made the CS-80 the first multi-timbral poly synth, though you could only mix the two timbres, not split them on the keyboard.
The CS-80 found itself in the hands of many now-iconic artists including Tony Banks of Genesis and Peter Gabriel in his solo work. Michael Jackson famously played one himself on “Billie Jean.” Toto used a CS to great effect on the keyboard solo of “Rosanna” and the “Dune” soundtrack. But it was Greek composer Vangelis who would truly immortalize the CS-80 in the scores to “Chariots of Fire” and “Blade Runner.”
