Paul Haslinger:Electronic storytelling with V Collection 11
Paul Haslinger is an Austrian-born composer, producer, and former Tangerine Dream member whose scoring and composition work now underpins a range of hit film, TV and video game titles. From hauling classic analog gear while touring to hybrid-studio efficiency, his career spans the full arc of modern music technology.
We joined Paul in Los Angeles to learn more about his creative philosophy and find out how V Collection 11 fuels his production process.
From Linz to Los Angeles
Raised in Linz, Austria, Paul Haslinger studied composition at Vienna’s Academy of Music. He took on session work around the city before accepting Edgar Froese’s invitation to join electronic pioneers Tangerine Dream in 1986. Over the next five years he played on chart-ing albums, helped craft film soundtracks, toured the world and earned his first grammy nomination - experience that convinced him he needed not only to write music, but steer it through every production stage. In 1991 he relocated to Los Angeles, set up his own studio, and began the transition from touring artist to solo artist and full-time composer.
If you make music, you also observe the effect your music making has on people.
Scoring catalogue across film, TV and games
Since relocating, Haslinger’s sound has reached almost every screen. His film credits range from the stylised action of Underworld and Crank to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and the iconic Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. On television, he scored AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire and earned an Emmy nomination for Showtime’s Sleeper Cell. Gamers may also recognise more recent work on Rainbow Six Siege. Whatever the project, Haslinger’s applies elegance, emotional restraint and hybrid sonic layering that evolves alongside the story.
V Collection 11 in the studio
Haslinger still owns many of the analog synths he used in the past, but software has become essential in his workflow for its efficiency, stability, and advanced performance options. V Collection 11 offers a definitive collection with the sonic depth and variety to meet the demands of professional producers and composers. With 45 instruments ranging from iconic analog to digital classics and hybrid acoustic engines - every timbre and texture imaginable is within arms reach.
It’s difficult to single out any particular instrument from the V Collection simply because there are so many of them - and so many are so good.
SEM V: reliable Oberheim character
The SEM V has been entirely rebuilt in V Collection 11, recreating the smooth state-variable filter Haslinger once used on stage . He demonstrates a dark and dystopian sound with some modulation, emphasizing the untamed 70’s attitude that made the original a classic.
As someone who actually knows the vintage instruments, I can appreciate a virtual collection that does a very good job emulating their character.
Augmented Series: composer’s dream
When a scene needs a fully formed atmosphere, Haslinger opens the Augmented series which offers 5 unique hybrid instruments. They blend acoustic samples with synthesis and in-depth performance controls, making them an ideal ally for all manner of textural sound design - from pitch-shifted strings to apocalyptic brass moods.
The Augmented Series, on each of its renditions, offers a lot of options.
“It’s been a pretty interesting and eventful run from that first exposure in a little rehearsal cellar in Austria to end-up somehow in hollywood scoring films.”
Looking back, moving forward
Haslinger’s path shows how technology and creativity evolve together, constantly informing new paradigms and practices. Today, V Collection 11 sits at the center of the composer’s toolkit, allowing you to discover thousands of sounds instantly, explore in-depth sound design and stay focused on what matters most: shaping ideas into musical worlds that tell a story.
