The rise of digital
Digital synthesizers were pivotal in shaping the sound of Electronic Body Music (EBM) and other genres like synthpop, new wave, and industrial in the 1980s. Instruments such as the Yamaha DX7, Ensoniq SQ80 and Synclavier introduced sharper, more precise tones that suited EBM’s aggressive rhythms and cold, mechanical textures. In synthpop and new wave, these digital synths produced bright, melodic hooks and atmospheric soundscapes, while in industrial music, they fuelled harsh, metallic textures that aligned with its dystopian, abrasive aesthetic.

He was introduced to the Moog synthesisers by Dr. Patrick Gleeson, who used the synthesizer on Hancock's landmark album "Crossings" (1972). However, it was Hancock’s later work, especially with "Headhunters" (1973), that saw him fully embrace the instrument.
