The evolution of analog synthesis revolutionized music. In the 1950s, electronic sound was confined to research labs and large-scale studios, where avant-garde composers experimented with oscillators and tape machines to craft new sonic landscapes. However, by the 1970s, advancements in technology made analog synthesizers more accessible, bringing them from specialized environments into the hands of musicians and hobbyists.

Michael Trent Reznor (born May 17, 1965) is an American musician, singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. The rise of digital
Digital synthesizers were pivotal in shaping the sound of Electronic Body Music (EBM) and other genres like synthpop, new wave, and industrial in the 1980s. Instruments such as the Yamaha DX7, Ensoniq SQ80 and Synclavier introduced sharper, more precise tones that suited EBM’s aggressive rhythms and cold, mechanical textures. In synthpop and new wave, these digital synths produced bright, melodic hooks and atmospheric soundscapes, while in industrial music, they fuelled harsh, metallic textures that aligned with its dystopian, abrasive aesthetic.

Harmonic accidents with Brian Eno
The Yamaha DX7 was notoriously difficult to program due to its complex FM synthesis, but Brian Eno saw great potential in it and mastered the instrument during a period of illness. He valued his deep understanding of the DX7 over newer synthesizers, stating, "I use the DX7 because I understand it. I know that there are theoretically better synths, but I don’t know how to use them." This mastery allowed him to create unique sounds integral to his album Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks.

From hardware to software with Herbie Hancock
In the early 1970s, Hancock began exploring electronic instruments and was particularly intrigued by the Minimoog's expressive capabilities. He was introduced to the Moog synthesisers by Dr. Patrick Gleeson, who used the synthesizer on Hancock's landmark album "Crossings" (1972). However, it was Hancock’s later work, especially with "Headhunters" (1973), that saw him fully embrace the instrument. To this day he revere’s Arturia’s instrument engines for their accuracy and innovation - an artist committed to evolving with the times.
